Final Ride of 2010

61* when I started 64* when I finished. Windiest ride I can remember. The winds were 28MPH gusting to 40MPH according to weather.com

I did the Heritage Park ride that was a staple of my training last season. One last time before the end of the year felt great. When I turned onto Pflumm, I saw a bird flying backwards trying to go into the wind. I knew then, that Pflumm was going to be harder than ever. The wind was crazy. There were multiple times where I had to lean into the wind in order to prevent being knocked off the road. Normally I’m just worried about vehicles on the road. Today, I had to worry about debris flying into my face.

I have no idea what my FTP is, but I’m pretty positive I wasn’t in Zone 1-2 for the majority of that ride. On the way out I was into the wind. On the way back, I was trying to get back in time for a meeting. I’m still super happy that I went out into this wonderful weather (for December).

And, Virtual Partner, I’ll get you next time. I try to keep my rides at 15MPH average, even when I’m on my mountain bike. I watched my virtual parnter on my 310XT pull away from the beginning. I was playing catch-up the entire time. At one point I was over 12 minutes behind. Then I got the wind at my back. I finished strong. I also made it back in time to get to my meeting!

Hyperactive 24 hours

I had a couple of difficult workouts that really shouldn’t have been. Swimming after work. Then running after dinner.

5 miles in 46:29
Description: On soft but firm surface, heart rate in zone 1-2 only. Pretty form and quick cadence.
Pre-Activity Comments from coach: Nice easy run
Post-activity comments: This wasn’t easy like it was supposed to be. I finished swimming about an hour before this run and I felt full-body exhausted from the start. I ate in between the workouts so when I started running I had a side-stich. The pain went away as I continued the run, but the full-body exhaustion did not. I was running with Tyson so we stopped to potty a couple of times. I had my watch set with alarms for cadence and for pace. That was a bad idea because it was beeping the entire time and I didn’t know what for.

Then this morning we did VO2 Max testing via the New Leaf program. It was on a treadmill. I’ll post the full results as soon as I get them.

Can you see why I like this video

I am a fan of Chrissie Wellington.  I’m not a fan of Brooks. I haven’t owned any Brooks shoes yet, so I may be a fan in the future.  I’m a really giddy fan of this video for an entirely different reason though.  Can you figure out what it is?

Leave a comment if you think you know.

Indoor activities are lame-o

I’ve got nothing cool to put here.  I went swimming at 24 Hour Fitness last night.  I slept like a baby.  I woke up at 4:30am this morning to get into the office by 5:30am.  Rebecca, Tracy, Ryan and Jake were up for a morning spin “unclassy” in the fitness center.  I had a 75 minute ride on my schedule, so it worked out really well for me.  After the ride I did week 1 day 2 of the “hundred pushups” program.  That’s 3 activities that I can’t really show anything on.

Lame!

My love hate relationship with swimming

It’s swimming season for my niece. Watching her swim is the closest thing I’ve done to swimming since October. Today I took the plunge. On the first official day of my training schedule, I had a swim workout.  I had no idea where my gear was.  It took me 20 minutes just to find my goggles. In the process, I found my head lamp too!  I was planning on a 45 minute / 1250 yard swim, just to get back in the swing of things.  I really wasn’t too worried.

After my warmup 100, I remembered how awful I am at this sport.  I couldn’t get a rhythm at all.  I was swallowing water and my nose was immediately reacting to the pool water.  Ugh.  I pushed through, with no rhythm.  About 15 minutes into the workout, I tweaked my left shoulder.  At that point, my breathing got even worse.  I switched to just breathing out of my right side to save my left shoulder.  I’m very bottom heavy, so breathing out of the same side doesn’t allow me to keep my body on the top of the water very well.  So at this point I’m swimming with my feet about 20* below the water and struggling just to stay floating.  But I keep going.Shortly after that, I called it a night.  I was full-body exhausted. (I still am) I ended up swimming for 30 minutes / 1000 yards.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being a visit to the dentist office and a 10 being partying with my wife in Mexico, this workout was a 2 (maybe a 3 tops).

So you might be wondering what the good part is.  First, I sleep like a baby after a good swim.  In about 5 minutes from now, I will be sound asleep.  Second, the full-body workout makes the pounds drop.  There is not a doubt in my mind that if I keep up with the swim workouts, I will be 30 pounds lighter by June.
