First GCDT bike ride was a success

We decided that Friday was the day to bike ride at lunch. Ron and I brought in bikes and helmets. Jason had to ride a mountain bike. We had a good ride, but realized how much harder it is with a mountain bike pretty quickly. Heritage Park is much better when the weather is nice. We saw several other bikes along the route as well. Even though we were out longer, we all were less tired and sweaty when we finished.

Jason is recovered

Jason’s foot is feeling better, or at least good enough to run 4+ miles today and still finish way ahead of the rest of the group. I’m really hoping his foot gets well soon. His speed really pushes me to go faster.

We changed up the route just about a half mile today. It was much more scenic. I thought that we would run into more smog than we did so it was actually pleasant. It was hot, but we had bits of shade along the way. I think if we went at 11am instead of noon, we might appreciate the 1 or 2 degrees cooler.

I think its just shin splints that have been bothering me. They were really bad at the start of the run, but towards the end I didn’t feel it.

Next weekend is Hospital Hill half marathon. I’m not ready. Saturday, I’m going to try to get in a 10 mile run. If Saturday goes well and I can still run, Sunday I’ll try to do another. Then I will take a full day of rest on Monday. The rest of the week is pretty well scheduled with the team at lunch plus the TriKC brick by brick.

Team swimming

Steve and Jason joined me at the YMCA for some lap swimming. There was a few complaints, but I think they have confidence that they can do the race in August. They are both faster swimmers than I am right now (Ron is too). We are going to try to make Wednesday swimming a regular thing. Tuesday and Thursday are running days. Friday we will try out biking at lunch too.

First successful group brick workout

Yesterday was much more difficult than I had planned. Primarily because of the 90 degree high, and high humidity. I did a workout with the team from work at lunch in the peak of the heat and humidity. After work I met up with TriKC at Shawnee Mission Park for a “brick by brick” workout.

For the ride, I tried to keep up with Kenny. I could only do it for 3 laps, Kenny went for a fourth.

I ran with Janae during the run. She told me about the course and was going, pretty much, the perfect speed for what I should have been doing.

This workout was mostly the short course for the Shawnee Mission Triathlon. Later in the season, they will start doing the long course. The TriKC group has been great and very supportive. Very much a part of how well my season is going and my future success.

Who knew that summer in KC was hot and humid

I have a half marathon in less than two weeks. I’m counting on the team at work to get me prepared. Today’s run was hot and humid. I guess I had better get used to it because it only gets worse from here until September.
