My niece has her last swim meet of the indoor season this weekend. She had a season with incredible accomplishments. She’s only 8, but she truly has inspired me to do more. I’ve been a “swim uncle” pretty heavily the past couple of months, now it’s time to transition to doing instead of watching.
Tomorrow, the 2010 triathlon season begins for me and my wife, with an indoor triathlon. At 9:40am we start together and at 10:40am we will finish together. The indoor triathlon is measured by distance covered, not time. After 15 minutes we switch to the bike, 25 minutes later we switch to the run, then 20 minutes later we finish.
Even though I don’t think I’ve had as much time in the gym or on the road this year, I definitely think I’m much stronger at this point in the year. It’s very nice to be able to look back at all of my previous workouts and measure the change. Especially when that change is an improvement.
I have no idea what to expect tomorrow. I don’t really know how to set goals for tomorrow. But I’m going to give it a shot.
If I can get 500 yards in 15 minutes I think I will be happy. I’m not sure how to judge the bike part. It will be on a stationary/spin bike, I’m not sure what the conversion calculations are, but I’ll shoot for 6 miles there. Then, if I hit the 6 mile mark I will be toast. If I can get 2 miles on the treadmill, I will be ecstatic. I know this is pretty aggressive for the beginning of the year, but accomplishing this will really require me to nail my transitions. Last year I used the transitions as a break to rest. This year I would like to improve that part of my game. I think the indoor triathlons will give me a good opportunity to do that.
I still don’t know what to eat before races. Tonight I had some g.i. issues during my run. I thought this might be a good sign, since it was before my race instead of during my race like I’ve had too many times before. The plan is to get a good night sleep, have a small breakfast of perhaps a breakfast bar or two and some fruit.
The race is being hosted by one of the triathlon clubs in KC, TriKC. It is at Kirmayer Fitness Center near KU Medical Center.
